Hedwig van Asten serves as a Professional Practice Fellow in the Department of Obstetrics, Gynaecology and Women's Health at the Dunedin School of Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, University of Otago. Her academic background includes a BA (Hons) from Oxford Brookes University, a Postgraduate Diploma in Public Health (PGDipPH) from the University of Auckland, a Master of Public Health (MPH) from the University of Otago, and she is a Registered Midwife (RM).
Van Asten contributes to the New Zealand Child and Youth Epidemiology Service (NZCYES) at the University of Otago, where she co-authors commissioned reports on key aspects of child and youth health in Aotearoa New Zealand. These reports provide data for policy-making and service planning. Key publications include: Duncanson et al., Children and young people with chronic health conditions in Aotearoa 2022 (2023); regional reports on chronic health conditions in Northern, Midland, MidCentral and Whanganui, Hutt Valley and Wairarapa regions (2023); Duncanson et al., Child Poverty Monitor 2022: Technical report (2022); Adams et al., Indicators of child and youth health status in Aotearoa 2021 (2022); Duncanson et al., Child Poverty Monitor: Technical report 2021 (2021); Duncanson et al., Child Poverty Monitor 2020: Technical Report (2020); and multiple Foundations for health reports covering regions such as Hawke's Bay, Northern, South Island, Southern, and Aotearoa 2020 (2020-2021). She has also been part of a research team funded to investigate the use and safety of anti-nausea medication in pregnancy (2021). Earlier in her career, she served as data manager for perinatal epidemiology research.
